The Endorsement Crisis PDF Print E-mail
by Rufus Shaw    Sat, May 19, 2007, 04:37 PM
There is a crisis developing regarding the positive and negative impact of certain Black political players’ endorsements in the upcoming mayoral run off.

Ed Oakley is set to announce that the infamous trio of John Wiley Price, Demetris Sampson, and Kathy Neeley, will be joining his campaign to help Oakley with the Black vote. They should do better for Oakley then they did for Max Wells since Ed Oakley has some Black voter support already. There is also no doubt that the John Price group will run away some voters from Ed Oakley.

With John Price and company joining the Oakley campaign, that leaves little room for Don Hill and company to join the Oakley effort. It is no secret that when Kathy Neely enters a campaign, all the air and all the money leave the room. Meanwhile, Tom Leppert is close to bringing aboard Lynn Flint-Shaw to co-chair his run off campaign and help lead his southern sector effort. If that happens, it will reunite Ms. Shaw, Rev. Freddie Haynes III and Willis Johnson. This trio worked well together in pulling off the last bond campaign victory that showcased the southern sector’s voting strength.

Tom Leppert’s major attraction to the Black electorate is that he represents hope and a new relationship between the Anglo business community and the Black community. “For years we have been promised by the Anglo business community that serious Black business development would finally happen. But it has not happened”, says Lynn Flint-Shaw. “Many African-Americans believe that with Tom’s contacts, business background and his commitment to the southern sector, he would be the mayor who can finally motivate the Anglo business elite to jump start southern sector economic development through Black business development.”

Ms. Flint-Shaw has also been wooed by Mr. Oakley to join his campaign. She enjoys a productive working relationship with Mr. Oakley. “Ed and I have worked together on a number of projects that have benefited the southern sector. He knows how to work city hall from a city councilman’s perspective.” says Ms. Flint-Shaw.

Don Hill’s endorsement is considered to be one of the most important endorsements in this run off election. However, a source with knowledge of this event told me that Mr. Hill and a group of his operatives literally ambushed Mr. Leppert in a scheduled meeting where Mr. Hill’s operatives demanded $200,000 for three weeks work to turn out the Black vote for Tom Leppert. A day later the price escalated to $750,000. I find this demand bizarre when you consider that Don Hill’s campaign organization was not one of his best assets in the mayoral election. There is certainly nothing criminal or unethical in negotiating payment for services. I am sure Don Hill and his people will add value to any campaign they join. But $750,000! Here is the bottom line: John Price and company are already with Ed Oakley. Where else can the Don Hill camp go? Of course, they could always sit this one out and risk having no stroke with either candidate.

Don’t underestimate Ed Oakley. I have heard too many people suggest that Tom Leppert has got this race won because of his appeal in North Dallas . I disagree. I see this race being very close. First off, there are quite a few voters in the North Dallas business community who feel Ed and Tom will both serve their interests equally. Second, Ed has the opportunity to make history by becoming the city’s first gay mayor which means gays and lesbians voters will be especially motivated as they should be. Finally, North Dallas voters may stay home because some of them still consider Tom Leppert an outsider.

Ed Oakley is a superb policy wonk. He knows the ends and outs of city hall. However, one has to wonder whether Ed’s strengths will begin to clash with City Manager Mary Suhm. Tom Leppert, on the other hand, is casting himself as an ambassador and visionary, a posture that seems to mix better in a city manager form of government where the mayor has the bully pulpit and the city manager is the wonk. All of this suggests to me that the race for mayor is far from decided. At least that is how I see it from South of the Trinity.

$750,000? Sure doesn't jive with the wish/demand list in Hill's Letter to the Editor posted in the DMN today.

Whatever happened to people volunteering to help the candidate they believe best suited for the office?

...
written by P. Jackson , May 19, 2007

And I'm sure Lynn Flint Shaw is not cheap. She should volunteer after the Super Sunday fiasco. What makes Shaw, Willis Johnson, and Dr. Haynes any more ethical than the JWP team?

...
written by Rufus Shaw , May 20, 2007

Let me clarify something here. First I don't believe Don Hill is expecting to get any money for himself. And second, the $750,000 figure is a budget for all expenses related to turning out the Black vote which includes advertising cost. Mr. Hill also wants the person he endorses to sign on to his wish list.

...
written by Dave Thomas , May 20, 2007

I think it unlikely that either candidate will seek, or get, the endorsement of Mr. Hill. Signing on to his wish list for the sake of an endorsement would provide a lot of ammunition for an opponent. Maybe the politically inexperienced Mr. Leppert would do that, but I kind of doubt it.

At this point I'll bet Mr. Hill finds himself on the sideline in this race.

Now that the Democratic Party has endorsed Oakley, Leppert might as well hang it up.

It is sad that someone like Lynn Flint Shaw would parlay her leadership appointments with DART and in the arts to political consulting cash. What ever happened to people serving in leadership positions without asking for handouts? So you get a appointed to a couple boards and now you can make lots of money consulting? Very sad. That's what is wrong with Dallas.

To P. Jackson;
Lynn Flint-Shaw will work for free as a volunteer if she joins the Leppert campaign. Records will show that she has always volunteered in the campaigns she has worked on. If you don't know the ethical differences between the JWP team and Mr. Johnson, Dr. Haynes, and Ms.Shaw then you probably don't know enough about the history of local Black politics for you to get it now. By the way I agree the Super Sunday effort was a flop. By the way Ms.Shaw raised money to help pay for the effort but she herself worked for free. But even though the voters did not show up as organizers had hoped, the sponsors of the event were the only Black people in town with an organized get out the Black vote event. What did you do to get out the Black vote?

...
written by Roger Herrera , May 20, 2007

That's Mayor Leppert to you, Francine.

Councilman Oakley is an oily, conflict of interest, know it all ass. I don't want him as an example of what a man should be.

...
written by Michael Davis , May 20, 2007

Oakley's history in the Black community is far from stellar. As many people know, Oakley's voting record has been on the wrong side of many votes, but on the same side as Laura Miller, on several issues that impacted the Black community.

...
written by Francine Borden , May 20, 2007

Well, Roger, let's see if the Republican Party is stupid enough to put the final nail in Leppert's coffin by endorsing him.

...
written by bk , May 20, 2007

Actually, Francine, the Republican Party of Dallas County has never endorsed in a non-partisan race. And will not this time.

That's why they call these races "non-partisan."

Mr. Shaw,
I have to disagree with you there. Rickey Smiley hosted a GOTV event right outside of city hall the Friday of early voting. Also, the NAACP and The Dallas Urban League hosted a GOTV event that resulted in hundreds of young adults going out to vote.

...
written by Kevin , May 21, 2007

I only have one question. What is the price tag for the black vote? Certain people can sell the vote, but the voters end up with broken promises in the end.

...
written by JN , May 21, 2007

Dmitris Sampson never passed up an opportunity to make a buck off a government entity, so no surprise she's trying to engratiate herself with the weak sister in this run-off

...
written by Rufus Shaw , May 21, 2007

Casey,
Lynn Flnit-Shaw raised money for the NAACP and The Dallas Urban League to get out the vote for Super Sunday and Election Day but she informed me that she is unaware of the GOTV event that you refer to resulting in "hundreds of young adults going out to vote." As for the Ricky Smiley event, I was not aware that the event resulted in voters caravaning from the event to the polls to vote which is what the Super Sunday Get Out The Vote event did. At any rate I hope all interested parties will particpate in some get out the vote activity to assure a strong Black voter turn-out in the upcoming run off election.

Roger - Keep it clean or stay off of this site! A lot of people don't like Ed, but words you have a tendency to use are better suited for the play ground. Educated, articulate people can same the same thing without resulting to such childish language as calling someone an ass. All that does is place what you have to say on the level of a third grader. So there!

Jay, Dallas has become a city flooded with black tar heroin. That heroin is being marketed to young Dallas school children.

Why did Councilman Oakley and the Dallas Police allow our streets to become flooded with heroin?

Rufus:Your"source"is second hand or totally unreliable and designed to discredit our endorsement, if any.
We met with members of both campaign teams:leppert and oakley.at no time in those meetings did ANYONE from my campaign team mention money!

...
written by Rufus Shaw , May 22, 2007

Don,
I stand by my source as I stand by all of my sources. It is ironic that you would attempt to discredit me and my sources when we are the same people who supported you and wrote the truth about your own issues when nobody else would. With all of the people involved in these meetings do you honestly think it is that hard to get information on what really happened? I can assure you that my source was neither anti-Don Hill nor interested in discrediting your endorsement.

...
written by Jay , May 22, 2007

Roger, your comment would have more strength if the majority of the cheese infractions occured within Oakley's district, but since they occur in much higher numbers in north Dallas, your arguement lacks credibility. But Heroin? Hmmm... a piece of the puzzle perhaps?

I don't think Oakley will get many gay votes. I know a lot of gays in Dallas who did not vote in the first round, did not know there was an election and will not be bothered to vote in the runoff. Gay people are sorry voters in local elections; they just don't care unless it's "their" issue, i.e., AIDS, adoptions, marriage, etc.

...
written by don hill , May 23, 2007

rufus-my intent was not to discredit you in anyway.i have commended you throughout the campaign for your work on the key issues. i disagree with the premise of the story advanced by your source.my prayers are with you and lynn.

cp, your post is either a campaign ploy to tick off the gay community or you just don't know what you are talking about. I know a lot of gay people and they vote strong.

I Think Oakley will win and this is primarily base upon how he has risen as a darkhouse and made a name for himself in the Dallas Political Playing field. Oakley is smart, and he has surrounded himself with smart people similar to Craig Watkins and Lupe Valdez. Timing plays a big part in everything and the Democratic have a strong hold right now based upon the legacy left by Laura Miller.

This mayor's election is about the ADVANCEMENT OF THE GAY AGENDA, plain and simple.

There's a Gay Rabidness, a Gay Feeding Frenzy Nationally over Ed Oakley's Run for Dallas Mayor.

If the Gay lifestyle is Good, and Godly, then why does it lead to disease and death?

Ed Oakley and others would say that the bi-sexual men causing the HIV epidemic in the Black community should just wear condoms. It's all about getting off whatever way you can. The GLBT group would certainly agree. Whatever feels right, and good, and pleasurable is ok. Gayness is part of hedonism. Right now their sexual perversion uses 4 letters of the alphabet. Will they run out of letters with the various additional aspects of their sexual perversions?

They, the Gays call it "Fairness". It's fairness for outwardly Gay people to gain political office, and further the Gay agenda. The Gay lifestyle leads to disease and death, including a lot of emotional suffering along the way.

G.A.Y....Gone Against Yahweh. Yes, They did it in the Old Testament, in the Old Times too. Still haven't learned from their mistakes.

1. The Gay lifestyle is SATANIC.
2. The Gay lifestyle leads to disease and death.
3. The Gay lifestyle is insane.
4. The Gay life-style is against Natures laws and Nature's plumbing.
5. All past great civilizations fell into debauchery just before they were either conquered from within or without.
6. "God didn't destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because the people were smoking." Rev. Ronald Wright.
7. The Oakley Mayoral Candidacy is an "Armageddon Event".

"Armageddon" is a place, and there will be many places, where there will be battles between good and evil, battles over issues, major issues. Satan is showing his face all over in the Gay Agenda, in the price of energy, in the Iraq War, pornography, etc. We are being challenged as never before.

We are in 2 Timothy 3.

Men, will you find your b**ls, and enter the arena, or is your material position too important?

We must stop Ed Oakley, and the Gay Agena here in Dallas, Texas!!!

We MUST love the gay people, but hate the gay lifestyle, the gay sexual dysfunction which negatively effects all of us. The debauched heterosexuals are equally a problem which also will be addressed.

"These are the times which try men's souls. The sunshine soldier, and sunshine patriot will shrink from the service to his country. But he who stands here now deserves the greater love of man and woman." Thomas Paine.

There's an HIV epidemic moving through the Black community caused by bi-sexual men. Is Ed Oakley calling for testing and abstinence as the two best ways to stop this plague? Or is he looking for his next target?

Thanks,

Richie

Sheridan's Speech to the Dallas City Council his past Wednesday calling for Oakley's removal from the Mayor's race.
___________________________________

Ethics and Perverts

Presented by Richie Sheridan to the Dallas City Council  May 23, 2007

We are in an ethical dilemma in our city, in our state, and in our nation. Before I proceed, let’s define Ethics.

Webster’s Ethics: Standards of conduct and moral judgement. The system or code of morals of a particular person, religion, group, person, or profession.

Ethics, or another word being politically incorrect, “Godly Conduct”, applies to all of us. We get a traffic ticket if we violate driving ethics. We are arrested if we violate bigger ethical laws. We get sick, or die if we don’t live right. We go to prison to supposedly make us more ethical, but with a 60 % recividism rate, or with 60% that return to prison, where is the learning of ethical behaviour?

However, the question is, who is violating the Ethics Codes, Laws that applies to our prison system? I presented a speech to the Dallas County Commissioners a few months ago entitled, “The Texas Prison System, Incompetancy or Malicious Intent?”

When I ran for City Council 2 years ago I said that it was the 4 Ms that were causing Dallas to be number 1 in crime. And then I came to DA Craig Watkins’ great, new, innovative program which completed the crime puzzle, completed society’s puzzle, for crime is so much a part of our lives. When we combine all the scattered pieces of the puzzle like Texas is the Country’s No. 1 Prison State, Dallas has been No. 1 in crime for 8 consecutive years, the HIV epidemic, homelessness and poverty are on the rise, the middle class is shrinking, and electric utility bills, food, medical, insurance costs, and gasoline prices are at historic all time highs, and we are hated around the world, and we are divided as never before, with Immigration, and the War in Iraq, and with Corporate Profits at all time highs, we, at least the 80% of us, must ask ourselves…ARE WE DUMMYS, or is it not clear that the governments (people in the governments) that are supposed to serve and protect We The People, are serving the interests of the Corporations that prey on us, and their own interests?

Our entire ethical system has been perverted, up and down, and sideways. Those who do this are perverts, those who change what is good to something un-ethical which serves the perverts’ predatory desires. It comes down to the desire for money, power, and the lust of the flesh. I myself have been a pervert in my life, but I am now recovering.

In conclusion, I call for Ed Oakley’s removal as a Candidate for Mayor of Dallas on the grounds that it will significantly further divide our city, and divide our country, and his candidacy is un-ethical. Dallas Black community in particular is beginning to get riled up about this, and rightfully so, in my opinion. If Councilman Oakley continues in the Mayor’s race it may be the last straw to break Dallas’ back, I apologize to all in saying.

God Save Dallas

Whether Ed Oakley or Tom Leppert is elected as the next Mayor of Dallas is not as important as how will southern sector economic development benefit those who currently reside in the areas where the development will take place. If those who live in the southern sector do not benefit from the development, then was it worth it? For more information, please get a copy of the Black Agenda.
