Today is a sad sad day in Dallas. More than likely the Cotton Bowl Committee will announce that it has decided to move the game to Arlington when the Cowboys open their new stadium.
Quite frankly I don’t think that the Cotton Bowl has a future. It was a fine fine place. But I hear people saying that it’s still a great venue for college football. But it’s not.
So I see a facility that will just crumble in disuse. Eventually it will simply be torn down.
When people think of the Cotton Bowl, they think of football. But, I remember seeing Spain and South Korea play in the World Cup there. One nation had one side and the other had the other. The crowd was enthusiastic. The bands were playing. The weather was great. Flags were flying. It was great.
We don’t want the Cotton Bowl to go away because it has so many cherished memories. But we’ve got to live in the real world. And, the real world says that
I love the Cotton Bowl. I think it’s a grand old place. It appears to me that the only reason we are hanging on to the Cotton Bowl is tradition.
If the Cotton Bowl had become the home of the Dallas Cowboys lots of other things would have grown up around it. But a Super Bowl in Downtown Dallas would have blanketed the city in business.
It still will. When the Super Bowl comes to Arlington, the City of Dallas will still benefit from the event. But I don’t think that a city as great as Dallas should be a parasite. The City of Dallas should be a leader.
