Sammy Must Earn Spot PDF Print E-mail
by Norm Hitzges    Mon, Feb 26, 2007, 02:27 PM

As I look at the National projections on the Rangers and read the local account, I look at the roster myself and something really starts to bother me.

What evidence do we have that Sammy Sosa can play?

It has been 3 years since Sammy Sosa has been a reasonable player. You have to go back to the middle of 2004. Since then his production has fallen completely off the table. He slid with the Cubs. He was awful with the Orioles. And, now he’s taken a complete year off.

I don’t want to be critical of Sammy at all. But, I want to be honestly observant of this situation. I would have way more confidence right now putting Jason Botts in the DH slot. He hasn’t proven anything at the Major League level. But, neither has Sammy in the last few years. And, Sammy’s getting older.

Botts has proven everything he’s had to prove in the minor leagues. Now it’s time for him to prove that he can be a Major League Ballplayer.

I’m getting very uncomfortable with everyone projecting Sammy Sosa into the starting lineup right now. Listen, he may bounce back and win the starting job. But, as far as I’m concerned right now Sammy Sosa is a spare part. And that’s all he is right now: a spare part.

And, he cannot play the outfield. Flat out…He cannot play the outfield. If Sammy is going to win the job here, it will be based entirely on his ability to hit the baseball. I haven’t seen any evidence in the past 3+ years that he can hit the baseball.

I just hope that the Rangers aren’t pinning false hopes on Sammy.
