Signing Young is a Must for Rangers PDF Print E-mail
by Norm Hitzges    Wed, Feb 21, 2007, 04:54 PM

You look at his accomplishments and the numbers put Michael Young right among the very best in baseball. All he is lacking is a stage. Sure the Metroplex is a big market, but just imagine what the buzz about Michael Young would be like if he were playing in a big BASEBALL market.

He’d be a hero in New York.

He’d be a hero in Boston.

He’d be a hero in any market that he played in but playing in Arlington has left him underexposed. Sure people know who he is. But, do they really know how special he is as a ballplayer?

Young has 2 more years left in his current contract. At his age, Young’s next contract will be for about 7 years or so. And, we’re talking big money and leverage. On the surface you’d think that the Rangers would have the leverage in this situation since they’ve got him wrapped up for 2 more years. But, Michael Young is the face of this franchise.

He’s the leader on and off the field. He’s the fan favorite. And, he’s the centerpiece of what could be one of the top infields in the Major Leagues.

The timing is perfect for Young and the Rangers to make a deal. The Rangers can make a statement by locking up Young. And, Young can get a significant raise 2 years earlier than scheduled.

I think it’s very likely that Young will sign this extension. The flip side of this is that if the club doesn’t re-sign Young it’s a very bad sign.

There’s always been a question of whether or not Mark Teixiera wants to remain a Ranger. I think re-signing Young right now would go a long way in wrapping up Tex.

Young has said that he wants to play for a winner and so has Tex. The Rangers must prove to both of these superstars that they are going to do what it takes to win.

Signing Michael Young should be a priority on the Rangers To-Do List.
