The Cowboys choice of Wade Phillips to be their next coach seems to have under whelmed this area and this country’s pro football fans.
You get the usual criticisms—boring, yes-man and too old. A high percentage of people immediately reacted by saying how little excitement the choice brought to them.
However, couldn’t you say that about virtually everyone on the Cowboys list of candidates? Virtually anybody hired anywhere in the NFL these days arrives with a knock—he’s a retread, under experienced, losing record, too young.
Phillips is a good fit for the Cowboys. He has the resume to address the Cowboys most obvious and glaring weakness—it’s horribly under-achieving defense!
That said, we are all left to guess what the offensive plan is now. We’re not even sure if Jason Garrett is the true offensive coordinator. We know what defensive scheme Phillips will employ.
But what’s the offense? Is it the scheme Garrett grew up in and would supposedly like to put in place, that would be Norv Turner’s early 90’s Cowboys offense. But we hear now that Tony Sparano, last year’s “sort-of play caller” will have a big role.
So, do we have a 2 tight end offense, the scheme that was put in last year? That’s a scheme Garrett’s never taught or played in. Or, do we go back to an offense that often uses a blocking back in front of the running back. If so, that makes last year’s 2nd round pick Anthony Fasano an immediate backup.
And remember, we signed another free agent tight end last year, Ryan Hannum, because we needed 3 tight ends to run such a scheme. Add that to the fact that Phillips has never worked with anyone on the Cowboys offensive staff and it’s already plain that the 2 people who will head that offensive side are Phillips and Sparano, not any coach that Phillips will bring in.
Perhaps this will all work but if it works well expect that Garrett will be hired away in a couple of years to be somebody else’s head coach. In a way, the Cowboys might actually want that because that’ll mean Dallas has had significant success in the next couple of years.
And, when’s the last time we had back to back years of significant success?
