Does the City of Dallas want the Super Bowl?

The 2011 Super Bowl is Dallas’ for the taking. The NFL wants to put the game in Jerry’s spectacular new stadium.

It would reward one of the core owners in the NFL. It would continue the NFL’s new agenda of taking the game to a spiffy brand new stadium. And it would bring the game to one of, if not the most visible franchise’s every.

A city that they could not go to because of the possiblility of bad January weather.

All those hurdles are now gone. The question is: will Dallas jump into this effort with Arlington? Dallas has been more than a bit reluctant to use much energy in the sports area over the last several years.

And, there will be a cost to the Super Bowl. Taxes…Overtime for police and fireman…regionally arranged transportation….All those and many other items will cost the region about $25 million.

For many this seems like a no brainer. But there are those who don’t want the municipality to spend any money on sports. There are 2 impacts of a Super Bowl. The first is the financial impact that the game has on the entire area. The second is the look of the city.

If Dallas balks at the Super Bowl, it will reinforce the perception of this being a “Can’t Do City”.

Just like sports teams, cities can have momentum or lack momentum. This fractured city full of leaders with personal agendas and this region, packed with cities that haven’t really gathered together for major efforts, are now permitted an opportunity to do so.
