The acid test on whether or not Michael Irvin will gain induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame happens Saturday morning in Miami.
39 NFL Writers, behind closed doors, will vote Yes or No on Irvin. He’s narrowly missed each of the last 2 years.
With no standout candidates this year most NFL observers feel that this is the year that Irvin gets in. If he doesn’t get in this year, he may never get in.
Even if you reach the final six, 32 of the 39 voters must still vote Yes for you to be chosen for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There are those who privately, but not publicly, who concede that Irvin’s off field problems affect the way they vote. One voter has even admitted that he’ll not vote for Irvin because of his dislike of Irvin’s TV persona.
Off field problems or personality should not be any part of the decision. The league and Hall of Fame concede that. But let’s also admit that all 39 voters are human and sometimes do make such decisions based partly on non-football issues.
If Irvin doesn’t get at least 32 of the 39 votes in a year where he appears a near shoe-in it will indicate that at least 8 voters oppose him… period.
It’s conceivable that those 8 or more will NEVER be swayed to vote for Irvin.
