Super Bowl XLI: Da Bears vs. Colts, Feb. 4

Commercials: About $2.2 million for 30-second spot. CBS would like to charge $2.6 but as we know in Dallas that's the starting price in negotiation. Doritos (of Dallas-based Frito Lay) will get all the pub with its viewer-originated and produced spots.

Texas connections:

Bears coach Lovie Smith: From the great Class B state champion Big Sandy teams of East Texas (RB David Overstreet) in the early 1970s.

Trivia: How are Lovie Smith and G.A. Moore connected?

(Answer below)

ESD represented

Bears QB coach Wade Wilson, East Texas State (A&M-Commerce) star was former Cowboys assistant and backup QB. Has four kids going to ESD. How he got there: Bears OC Ron Turner (good friends with R.C. Slocum of A&M and Aggies QB coach of '88) is the brother of former Dallas OC Norv Turner.

HP's Randy Allen knows the Colts

Highland Park coach Randy Allen coached Colts RB Dominic Rhodes and TE/Deep snapper Justin Snow while he was at Abilene Cooper from 1991-98. Snow, who lives in Frisco, once appeared on David Letterman as a deep snapper. Rhodes, of course, once was a training gopher when Cowboys were at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls.

Baylor connection

Bears OT Fred Young and Indianapolis TE Justin Snow.

Trivia answer:

When G.A. Moore got the first eight Texas state titles he'd go on to win, Moore was coach at Celina which played Big Sandy at Dallas' Forester Field for the '74 Class B state title. The game ended in a 0-0 tie and both sides got a state-co-championship. Lovie Smith was a LB/TE for Big Sandy, which won state titles in Smith's three years (1973-74-75).
