MOBILE VOTING by Pat Cotton PDF Print E-mail
by Special to DallasBlog.com    Wed, Apr 12, 2006, 07:49 PM

In the January 19, 2002 election, there were 34 different mobile voting sites. A total of 362 votes were cast at those locations. The expense of mobile voting was $34,186.14, making each vote cost $94.00. Using those figures, each of the 34 sites cost Dallas County taxpayers $1,005.00 each. Most of those sites were only open for about 3 hours each. What is even more frustrating was that there were another 28 regular early voting sites being used for this same election. Those locations were open for two weeks prior to election day. Were those 362 votes worth the money it cost us? I say no. It was a silly extravagant experiment that certainly didn’t mean that it should be repeated. Where is fiscal responsibility? What created the need for those mobile voting sites? The DISD hoped that the mobile sites would give parents, teachers and students a special opportunity to vote. Did it work? Not very well. Let’s see the people proposing this again take another look at the 2002 figures. If they have any accountability, they will drop this idea. Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it
