LADY LEADERS DESERVE PRAISE PDF Print E-mail

Kudos to Mayor Laura Miller and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for their efforts to resolve the thorny Wright Amendment issue. They recognize that Congress is marching toward repeal and have stepped in to try to get a compromise working before the region is told what to do with its air traffic and aviation assets by folks who don’t live here.

Mayor Miller approached Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief to seek a regional solution while Sen. Hutchison has called for Congress to stand down until Oct. 1 to give the two mayors an opportunity to put a compromise together. Who knows what that compromise might be, but what are the alternatives?

Dallas and Fort Worth can sit here and watch members of Congress from other states chip away at Wright, just as Missouri’s Sen. Kit Bond did to get Southwest flights from Love Field to his state. Or the cities and their combined leadership – both city councils and members of Congress -- can twiddle their thumbs until the wholesale repeal of Wright is accomplished by those who want to open up markets to their cities. People watching the fight in Washington say it’s going to happen.

KBH was smart to call for a “time out” until local folks can get their game plan together – a plan that allows local people to set the timetable and the rules and regulations for using Love Field once Wright is repealed.

While Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, who represents the district that includes Love Field, is opposed to repeal, Reps. Sam Johnson and Jeb Hensarling are strong proponents for getting rid of the outmoded amendment. Rep. Joe Barton continues to march lockstep withr DFW Airport and American. One has to wonder about his statement this morning in the DMN: “I think the Wright amendment is good for the flying public.”

It may be good for DFW and good for American Airlines, but how can he say, with a straight face, that it’s good for the flying public?

The train is going down the track. It's time for all concerned to get aboard.
