A 3rd Rounder for a Killer LB...I Say Yes PDF Print E-mail

Would you give a 3rd round draft choice for a perennial All-Pro Linebacker who’ll turn 31 this summer?

That’s a question the Cowboys may be asking themselves.

Ray Lewis has excelled from virtually from the moment he stepped onto an NFL field 10 years ago after a stellar career at the University of Miami.

It appears he’d fit beautifully into an Inside Linebacker slot next to Brady James in the Cowboys 3-4 alignment.

Lewis seems to be just the kind of player Bill Parcells likes—tough, experienced and passionate about the game.

On a Cowboy team that needs help at LB and is “going for it” this year, Lewis looks like a perfect fit.

Lewis has wanted out of Baltimore for about a year now. The Ravens tried to get a #1 for him last year but rumor has it that the most they were offered was a #2. In hindsight, they should have taken it.

Injuries limited Lewis to 6 games last year. Now he’s approaching 31. He’s still an emotional leader but carries with him some personal baggage along with the whispers that he’s slowing down.

You might be able to get Lewis by offering a #3. The 3-4 defense would give him less ground to cover and might be the perfect scheme in which he can “age gracefully”.

Lewis has his detractors with his sorry conduct after the Super Bowl a few years ago still lingering in many minds. There are a lot of folks who believe he’s fortunate not to be in jail for the part he played in a double homicide outside the Cobalt Lounge after the Super Bowl.

But as he approaches 31, there’s no question that there’s some mileage left on those tires. A 3rd rounder certainly isn’t a high price to pay. Especially given the track record of the Cowboys recent 3rd round picks—Hensen, Peterman. If I’m the GM and offered this deal, I say yes.
