Super???? Bowl...Not Quite PDF Print E-mail
by Norm Hitzges    Mon, Feb 6, 2006, 01:56 PM

Pittsburgh winning the Super Bowl completed the most fantastic run to an NFL Championship in the 40 year history of this game. The Steelers had to win their last 4 regular season games to make the playoffs. Then eliminated the #’s 1,2 and 3 AFC seeds (Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Denver) before polishing off the #1 NFC seed in Super Bowl XL. Never has a team had to beat this kind of quality to win it all.

That said, this was the worst Super Bowl I believe I’ve ever seen. The Steelers made 3 huge plays but otherwise did very little. Defensively people will point to only 10 points allowed as some kind of triumph. Not for me. Dropped Seattle passes, some questionable officials calls, 2 missed field goals and absolutely horrific clock management at the end of each half probably cost Seattle 14-24 points.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had easily the worst performance ever for a winning QB in the big game. He had a QB rating of 22.6. The next lowest rating for any QB on a winning Super Bowl team was John Elway’s 51.89 in Super Bowl XXXII.

But there was virtually nothing about this game that said “Super Bowl”. Questioanble coaching…Dropped passes…poor clock management…shaky officiating…a mediocre telecast…below average quality of ads. Even the halftime show simply didn’t create that huge game feeling.

At the end of it I was left wondering how each of these teams ever got to this point. I was also left with the feeling that if these two could play in the Super Bowl, there’s hope for the ’06 Cowboys. Shoot, there may be hope for the ’06 Saints.
