I don’t want to tell you that quarterbacking is not a tremendous, tremendous part of the game…But as we focus on quarterbacking, look at the oddness of the QBs that hang around at this time of year.
Often it is not the perceived “best QBs” that take their teams far in the playoffs. Look at what happened last week: the two “best” QBs got bounced from the playoffs.
Now, look at who remains: Jake Plummer, who was on life support in Arizona; Jake Delhomme who was passed over by any number of teams including the Cowboys; Matt Hasselback, who is coming into his own; and Ben Roethlisberger who in his 2nd year is performing at a much higher level than could have been expected.
The Cowboys could have had any of the QBs of the last 5 Super Bowl teams. Trent Dilfer, Tom Brady and Brad Johnson were all available for the Cowboys. Now a handful of Cowboys fans want to go out and get someone to replace Drew Bledsoe.
Drew Bledsoe is no worse than any of the remaining QBs. Think about it. Do you think that Carolina thought that they were getting a Super Bowl level QB in Jake Delhomme? Not at all.
Did you think that Trent Dilfer was a Super Bowl QB?
Do you think that the Patriots expected Tom Brady to lead them to 3 Super Bowl victories when they drafted him in the 6th round?
Once again, I don’t want to completely demean the position of QB. But I do want to point out that, in this NFL, Drew Bledsoe is definitely capable of being a Super Bowl QB.
