Mavs Better Meet Avery's Expectations--Or Else Print E-mail
by Norm Hitzges    Sat, Jan 14, 2006, 11:42 AM

Kudos to Avery Johnson for continuing to study his basketball team from the perspective of where he wants it to go.

Most coaches in any sport use the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach. But Johnson believes this club is championship caliber and by benching Erick Dampier and replacing him with DeSagana Diop Johnson’s sending a signal to everybody on the team.

He simply will not accept low effort evenings.

How many coaches of teams that are 26-10 would be rattling the cage of their team to re-focus them in midseason after just one poor effort, the overtime loss in New York?

Damp’s very capable of getting 10 rebounds and blocking 2 shots in 25 minutes of action every night. But he tends to simply disappear some evenings and “mail in” games.

On a very young team, the youngest team of any of the major contenders, Johnson is sending signals that he hopes will have effect, not only this year, but years to come.

That message is—“I will not accept ho-hum efforts wherever they appear!”

Bravo to A.J.
