It seems like the biggest story in America for the past couple of days has been that Vince Young is entering the NFL Draft.
Vince Young is a fabulous athlete. He’s a fabulous running QB. And, his accuracy has improved dramatically this season. VY has moved himself into the top 3 of the NFL Draft. A combination of beauty in the eyes of the beholder combined with needs has made VY the #1, #2, or #3 overall pick in the NFL Draft.
If you take VY you can absolutely not start him next year. Unless you want your brains scattered across the landscape. I don’t believe an NFL team is going to totally restructure its offense to give VY the Zone-Read Option like he has run at Texas. He is going to take snaps from center. That is different. He is going to have to learn to read defenses as he backpedals. Oh, yes, he can learn to do this but you are going to have to be patient.
One other thing, within 4 or 5 years VY will not be a running QB. He will be a QB who realizes that there is far more safety in the pocket than out of the pocket. Look at Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick, they now look to pass before they run. Notice I say “running quarterbacks” not “escapable quarterbacks”; there is a big difference. A running QB thinks run first an escapable QB thinks, ‘…I need to survive the rush in order to find an open receiver…”
Running QBs are an endangered species in the NFL. And VY won’t be a running QB for long. He simply won’t. Oh, he’ll always have the escape-ability. But he will not be a runner for long.
I keep hearing people ask how Houston can pass on VY…First of all there is a matter of an $8 million bonus Houston owes David Carr….Secondly, I’m not sure that Houston has given up on Carr. They may think that they simply need to get some help on the offensive line.
But the bottomline here is that if Houston were to take Vince Young they would basically be trading David Carr (after they pay him the huge bonus) and Reggie Bush for a QB that is going to take at least 1 or 2 years to develop. That’s just not smart.
VY will be a top choice. But he will not be the TOP choice, at least as long as Houston holds the selection.
