It’s off to the races, so to speak, as candidates prepare for the 2006 primaries. Several candidates have officially filed with their county or state party. Filing ends Mon., Jan. 2. Here’s a look at some of the House and Senate races shaping up. Because filing is ongoing, this is a work in progress, but here’s what we know so far regarding Dallas-Fort Worth area races:
HD 63. Several Republican candidates, including Tan Parker, Ricky Grunden, and Anne Lakusta, are seeking the seat left open by Rep. Mary Denny’s (R-Aubrey) retirement.
* HD 99. Rep. Charlie Geren (R-Ft. Worth) has two opponents that have filed: Colby Brown and retired Lt. Colonel Chris Hatley.
* HD 98. Retired school administrator Bill Skinner has filed against incumbent Vicki Truitt (R-Keller) in the March primary.
* HD 97. Dan Barrett filed to run in the Democratic primary. He’s seeking to unseat Rep. Anna Mowery (R-Ft. Worth) in November, but the district is heavily Republican.
* HD 101. Thomas Latham is challenging Rep. Elvira Reyna (R-Mesquite) for her House seat in the March primary.
*HD 91. Since Rep. Bob Griggs (R-North Richland Hills) announced his retirement from office, former North Richland Hills mayor Charles Soma, Tarrant County GOP chairman Patricia Carlson and Birdville school board member Kelly Hancock threw their names in the hat to replace Griggs.
* HD 94. Rep. Kent Grusendorf (R-Arlington) faces a primary challenge from former State Board of Education member Diane Patrick, who is currently an education professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.
* HD 106. This is the open seat vacated by Rep. Ray Allen’s retirement. So far Kirk England and Tim Johnson have filed on the Republican side. Katy Hubener filed for the seat as the Democrat. Hubener narrowly lost to Allen in 2004.
Other Metroplex Republicans seeking re-election include Reps. Tony Goolsby, Linda Harper-Brown, Bill Keffer, Dan Branch, Fred Hill, Joe Driver, Will Hartnett, Jim Jackson, Jodie Laubenberg, Myra Crownover, Todd Smith, Bill Zedler and Sens. Florence Shapiro and Bob Deuell.
