On the day Southwest Airlines launched its service from Dallas Love Field to Kansas City and St. Louis, American Airlines announced it too would begin service to those destinations from Love Field on March 2nd of next year. Southwest will operate four flight daily from Love to both Missouri cities while American will operate four flights a day to St. Louis and three flights each day to Kansas City.
In something of a surprise American Airlines also announced that it would begin flights between Dallas Love Field and Austin and San Antonio. American Eagle will fly four times a day between Love Field and San Antonio, Tex., and five times a day between Love and Austin. American will begin selling tickets for their Love Field service starting Sunday, Dec. 18. Five cities will lose service from D/FW as American shifts equipment and crews to service the Love Field routes: Long Beach, California.; Providence, Rhode Island.; Lima, Peru; Green Bay, Wisconsin.; and Rochester, Minnesota.
The beginning of today's Southwest service and American's pending service will create a head-to-head battle between the two airline giants from Love Field. Recent Federal legislation lifting Wright Amendment restrictions for the state of Missouri has triggered the competition.
