It looks like Dat Nguyen has played his last down as a Dallas Cowboy. This is the 2nd time in 2 years now that one of the quiet, dedicated defensive Cowboys has moved on.
Last year it was Darren Woodson. This year, it’s Dat Nguyen. The Cowboys are very fortunate that they built this defense so quickly that they have been able to handle the loss of these 2 key players.
But the Dat Nguyen story is really an odd one. He has defied the odds since high school. He is not big. He doesn’t have lightening speed. In street clothes you might not ever guess that Dat even played high school football.
When Bill Parcells got here, Dat was a marked man. Dat is not a “Parcell’s type Linebacker”. He is small and Parcells likes “big”. But Bill found out that “big” is not necessarily a product of size, sometimes it can be a product of heart. And it would be very hard to find an NFL player with a bigger heart than Dat Nguyen. What he lacks in size he made up for in desire and work ethic.
DN will be missed because, during the lean years he was a real warrior here. A lot like Darren Woodson. But at least Woody got a ring. Dat has very little to show for all of his hard work.
In a Cowboy era that did not produce many bright spots, Dat Nguyen shined.
