Tom Hicks has signed former GM John Hart to a 3 year contract extension as "Senior Adviser". In exchange Hart has agreed not to pursue any future GM jobs around the league.
This infuriates me!
What in the world are the Rangers doing extending the contract of John Hart as a “Senior Adviser"? Ranger owner Tom Hicks said the extension, that is for more than a million dollars, a year meant to keep Hart from becoming a General Manager anywhere else. As part of this deal Hart has agreed not to pursue a GM job for 3 years.
WHY? Why are the Rangers afraid of John Hart becoming a General Manager somewhere else? When Hart left here he said that he didn’t want the hectic job of being a GM anymore. Then he pursued at least 2 maybe 3 other GM jobs.
On a team that has tried to bring its budget under control why is this money being spent? Will Hart’s advice by email or phone equal the money that could be spent on a middle reliever? Because, for what the Rangers are paying Hart they could conceivably go out and sign a middle reliever for 3 years.
Finally, and perhaps most objectionable of all is the signal that this sends in the baseball market place. Young GM Jon Daniels doesn’t need a “Senior Advisor”. But Tom Hicks does?
This makes it look like Hicks needs Hart’s advice to approve moves made by Daniels. That message to whatever degree it is sent is wrong! It undercuts Daniels authority and that’s the last thing an incredibly intelligent but very young General Manager needs.
