FIDEL: Hollywood's Favorite Tyrant

Currently Hollywood has chosen, once again, to highlight the excesses of the United States during the cold war. It is useful to remember our own foibles and transgressions when our nation is under threat; however, the reasons for the "cold war," such as Communist desire for global domination, and their results, such as the murder of tens of millions of innocents, rarely if ever enter the popular culture. Despotic Communism is and remains a pernicious challenge to any society that recognizes the inherent dignity of the individual. Humberto Fontova, author of Fidel: Hollywood’s Favorite Tyrant (Regnery, $27.95), argues that a disciple of Communist Titans Mao and Stalin, Cuba’s Fidel Castro, is still up to his old cold war ways just off our shore.

While many Americans have rightly focused on the tragedy of 911, those same Americans would be shocked to know that we still share the hemisphere with a Communist tyrant who not only is still denying basic human freedoms to his own population but a despot who, according to Fontova, nearly orchestrated a terrorist attack on New York City that was even larger in scope than 911.

Fortunately for us all, Castro’s Nov. 23, 1962, plot was broken up by the FBI. The captured target list included: Manhattan’s main bus terminal, New Jersey oil refineries, and the Statue of Liberty. Fontova points out that as recently as 1998 the FBI arrested Cuban spies who were sending letter bombs to Cuban Americans and infiltrating our military bases, among other things. Indeed, Fontova presents disturbing evidence that could indicate that Castro is currently acting through his "star pupil" Hugo Chavez of Venezuela to support our nation’s enemies. This is one of the many examples of Castro's attempts to injure the United States that are described and corroborated in Fontova's work.

Cuban-born Fontova in a clear, concise, and often poignantly humorous manner exposes Castro for what he is: a Communist tyrant and all that entails. Castro and compatriots (including his now deceased sidekick, the murderer Che Guevara) are exposed from their early days of student thuggery through the early state-sanctioned mass executions after the Communist takeover to Castro’s current "public relations" and blackmail campaigns. Recent revelations of the secret videotaping of celebrities’ "nighttime cavortings" in Cuban resorts do a lot to explain the motivations behind the fawning comments of many Hollywood types. Through Fontova, the reader gains unique insights into the nature of this cold-blooded sociopath of the tropics.

As a biographical expose of a tyrant, this book is worth your coin. As a warning to your neighbors, it is worth their money as well. Read Fidel by Humberto E. Fontova.
