Karl RoveRecent news reports have speculated that President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court somehow came about because Karl Rove ("Bush's brain") was distracted by the special investigator's Valerie Plame inquiry. I find that hard to believe. To be sure, the Miers nomination has all the earmarks of a Rove pick. She would be someone he could quietly tout to religious conservatives (such as James Dobson) as an evangelical while reaching out to mainstream folks who would view her as a moderate and to women who would applaud her as the successor to Sandra Day O'Connor. I like Harriet Miers, but she's a political pick and that is Rove's forte, albeit one that appears to have backfired. Still, Miers may yet manage to manuever through Judiciary Committee hearings. As for Rove's status in the White House, only an indictment could force him out. Losing Rove would be more than a blow to Bush, it would be as catastropic as Katrina for him.
